Hiatus

Danny Willems

The word hiatus implies a space of possibility—an opening for the unexpected. As a dance company, Hiatus seeks to create such openings, fostering meaningful human connection in the here and now. Whether in a theater, studio, or outdoor setting, our work draws attention to the physical and social environments we inhabit.

We Create contemporary dance performances, tours, and develops artistic projects. Each piece explores the many layers of the body, playfully, powerfully, and physically, as a medium that connects us to the world.

This world, however, is facing urgent and fundamental challenges. As residents of Brussels, professionals in the cultural sector, and citizens of a planet in ecological crisis, Hiatus listens, questions, and responds. Social and ecological issues mark our artistic trajectory, shape the company’s operations, and guide our interactions.

We Connect through participatory projects, inviting people to explore and express ideas. Such as Open Mondays, where dancers share movement practices in an inclusive dance session, and Land Connection Practices,in which we invite participants in a green space to reconnect with their senses and nature.

Artistic interventions may also emerge from external collaborations or creative commissions. Each initiative begins with a spirit of social curiosity and ecological awareness, creating space for encounters, dialogue, and deeper connections.

We Share artistic gifts as a way to spark connection by offering a dance, a meditation, a poem or a book perhaps. These are not just expressions, but invitations to stillness and meaningful moments.

The values we want to see reflected in the world, integrity, care, meaningful engagement, and sustainability, form the foundation of Hiatus’s identity. These principles are present in every project, every collaboration, and every interaction.

For Hiatus, dance is not only about presentation, it is how we take our place in the world, inviting others into moments of connection, contemplation, and quiet transformation.
